WHAT DO I DO?

When people say to me; “So, what is it you do, exactly?” I’m tempted to pretentiously reply:

“I carefully balance the skills of communication, technology, psychology and business with incredible visual and emotional sensitivity to achieve effective and appropriate design solutions that will benefit my clients’ business and boost their profiles”

But I don’t. I often just say:

“Oh, you know, logos, brochures, marketing ideas… that kind of thing”

I think that’s really what they want to know!

EXPERIENCE

I have been a freelance designer since 1987. 

The work I have taken on over the years has been diverse and I never shy away from a challenge! I’m equally happy working for a small business with a tight budget as I am for a national (or international) brand. By working with some of the UK’s finest agencies, I have been entrusted to handle work for such high profile companies as:  

TEACHING

Alongside my freelance work I was also a lecturer in graphic design at Blackpool & The Fylde College for 15 years at both Diploma and Degree level. As well as teaching there, I was commissioned to design a variety of promotional items for the college including their prospectus. 

I keep in touch with a number of my ex-students and I am very proud of their achievements within the industry.

These five stages
are typically how I work:

1. INITIAL CONSULTATION
Getting to know you, your business, your audience and your objectives helps inform the design and keep your values and character at the heart of the creative process. Working together at this stage, we will identify and agree project objectives, deadlines and budgets.​
2. RESEARCH & CONCEPTS
Various options are explored to identify the most effective and relevant approaches. Your input at this stage can help me understand your competitors and clarify your vision. The strongest concepts are developed and presented to you together with an explanation of the thought process.
3. DEVELOPMENT
Ideas are evaluated against the brief at this stage and the pros and cons are carefully considered. Together we can adjust, tweak, modify and perfect until you are completely happy and confident in the design. ​
4. DELIVERY
After agreeing the design and production deadlines, artwork is prepared for whichever purpose it is intended. This can be supplied either directly to you or I can consult with the printer/supplier on your behalf.
5. AFTER SALES SERVICE
It is often the case that a design can have more than one life. In some cases it can be applied over and over again to maximise its effectiveness. We can pursue future options after the initial project is completed. It can then be useful to monitor the impact of the design and look at ways to develop and grow your business.
