The Restaurant Group produce puzzle books and freebies to hand out to kids eating at their restaurants. Clip-art style characters were initially used, however these were crudely drawn and lacked charm and personality. They needed updating, refining and giving a homogeneous look.
I felt it was important to have the characters looking directly at the viewer in order to be more engaging. Linework has a more flowing, quill-like quality as opposed to the harsh and scratchy originals. Only the front cover of the activity books were in full colour, so it was important to make sure that the characters worked in outline and greyscale for the inner pages.
